Halloween Employee Picks: Part I

It’s that time of the season again and we are keeping up our tradition of Halloween-themed Employee Picks. Some of our past picks include FRIGHT NIGHT, NEAR DARK, PLAY MISTY FOR ME, and INFERNO.

Here’s what we chose this time around:::

“Hocus Pocus” directed by Kenny Ortega (Marisa’s Pick)After 300 years, three sister witches are resurrected in Salem Massachusetts on Halloween night, and it us up to two teenagers, a young girl, and an immortal cat to put an end to the witches reign of terror once and for all.

“Persona” directed by Ingmar Bergman (John’s Pick)With some of the most iconic imagery ever committed to film, this exceptionally beautiful specimenof movie-making (The New Yorker) is recognized as a modern masterpiece and a landmark in late twentieth-century art (Time Out London). Actress Elisabet Vogler (Liv Ullmann) has stopped speaking and withdrawn completely. Under doctor’s orders, she’s taken to a remote seaside cottage by a nurse, Alma (Bibi Andersson). Alma chats to fill the silence and gradually begins to lay bareher entire identity until she discovers it is being coolly sucked away from her. As the women battle for control and sanity, the question becomes not which of them is patient and which is caregiver, but are they two separate women at all?

“Lisa and the Devil” directed by Mario Bava (Josh’s Pick)While on vacation in Spain, an American tourist (Elke Sommer) is drawn into a terrifying world of mystery, madness and murder in this surreal spine chiller directed by Italian horror maestro Mario Bava. A blind countess (Alida Valli), her imbalanced son (Alessio Orano) and a creepy bald butler (Telly Savalas) who carries around a mannequin all come into play in this fantastically bizarre tale liberally spiced with gruesome, gothic deaths.
